2011 Giuseppe Cappellano Barolo 'Pie Franco' DOCG is a rare, traditional Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba, produced from ungrafted Nebbiolo in the Gabutti cru. The warm 2011 growing season brought generous ripeness and a more open-knit profile than the sternest vintages, making it a compelling expression of both vintage character and terroir while still retaining Barolo’s classic structure. Gabutti, on the compact marl-rich soils of Serralunga, is prized for yielding wines of depth, tension and longevity, and the ungrafted old vines behind Pie Franco give this bottling an especially pure, historic voice.

The bouquet is haunting and layered, with dried rose, violet, red cherry and blood orange set against notes of tar, licorice, anise and sweet spice. The estate is also historically linked to the creation of Barolo Chinato, another enduring Piedmontese classic. Farming is organic in practice, harvesting is by hand, and the cellar work is resolutely traditional, with long macerations and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks, a method that favors transparency, structure and age-worthy nuance over polish or embellishment.
