Tokaj-Oremus Tokaji Eszencia 2014 is one of Tokaj’s most singular sweet wines, made under the Tokaji appellation from the free-run nectar of botrytized berries, principally Furmint with Hárslevelű, Zéta and Sárgamuskotály. In 2014, a humid growing season and wet autumn encouraged noble rot but demanded severe berry selection, yielding tiny quantities and a style defined less by sheer weight than by remarkable lift, purity and finesse. Tokaj’s volcanic hills, mixed soils of rhyolite, tuff and clay, and its long autumns shaped by the Bodrog and Tisza rivers create the ideal conditions for botrytis, giving Eszencia its haunting balance of immense sweetness and vivid acidity.

Awarded 96 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, this Eszencia opens with an extraordinary perfume of dried apricot, orange marmalade, acacia honey and peach nectar, followed by saffron, candied citrus peel and delicate floral tones. The palate is unctuous yet weightless, with electric acidity carrying layers of fig, ginger, beeswax and tea-like spice across a finish that seems almost endless. Serve it as a meditation wine or pair it with Roquefort, foie gras on brioche, or apricot tart, where its freshness keeps the sweetness precise rather than heavy.

Tokaj-Oremus was established in 1993 when the Álvarez family of Vega Sicilia acquired the historic estate, setting out to restore Tokaj’s international stature through meticulous vineyard work and exacting cellar practice. Grapes for Eszencia are harvested berry by berry by hand, and the precious free-run juice ferments slowly—often over years—because of its exceptional sugar concentration, before maturing in the estate’s deep, historic underground cellars. The result is a benchmark expression of Eszencia: profoundly traditional, extraordinarily rare, and shaped by a house philosophy that values patience, purity and the noblest expression of botrytized fruit.
