Jean Marc Roulot Puligny-Montrachet “Les Caillerets” Premier Cru 2016 comes from one of Puligny’s most coveted premier cru sites and is a chiselled, mineral-driven expression of Chardonnay with striking finesse.

The Les Caillerets climat sits on very stony, limestone-rich soils that emphasize tension and precision in the glass, giving penetrating aromas of lemon zest, green apple, white peach and pear layered with white blossom and wet stone. The 2016 vintage in the Côte de Beaune was marked by severe spring frost followed by a generally warm, dry growing season, resulting in reduced yields but producing concentrated, classically proportioned wines with fresh acidity and fine definition. On the palate, this wine is sleek yet deep, with bright, high acidity, a medium-full body and a fine, almost saline line of minerality; subtle notes of toast, fresh butter, brioche and sweet spice frame the fruit, evolving toward hazelnut, honey and a gentle flinty smokiness on a long, precise finish. Production from Roulot’s small holding in Les Caillerets is very limited, with only a handful of barrels typically made, which helps explain the wine’s rarity and desirability. It pairs beautifully with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, roast chicken with morels or other mushrooms, or a simple plate of Comté or aged Gruyère.
