Heresztyn Mazzini Gevrey Chambertin 'La Perriere' Premier Cru 2021
Vintage Character
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 'La Perrière' Premier Cru was born in one of the estate's most demanding recent seasons. A polar frost on 5 April damaged all its parcels and reduced the potential crop. Cool, wet weather followed in May and the early summer, requiring close work against disease pressure. The domaine eventually harvested from 22 to 29 September, later than in the warm, early years around it. This sequence favours freshness and precise selection over the sheer density of a sunnier vintage, and the estate's red wines from this year carry the imprint of a small, carefully managed harvest.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
La Perrière has a singular geological story: the plot occupies a former stone quarry later filled with soil. The domaine calls this its most refined Gevrey premier cru, notable for harmony and elegance, at 13% alcohol. That identity gives a Pinot Noir whose red-fruit detail, fine tannins and measured length matter more than a forceful opening. In a cool year aromatic restraint rewards time in the glass; the palate unfolds gradually instead of offering every layer at once, with clove and earth behind the cherry. Roast chicken with mushrooms, duck or a simple herb-scented dish let its finesse remain audible. Serve at about 15 to 16 degrees.
Winery Background
Florence Heresztyn and Simon Mazzini farm roughly six hectares around Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny. Their La Perrière parcel was planted in 1982, according to the estate's technical sheet, and is worked organically with biodynamic practices and ground cover. Native yeasts and gentle extraction are part of the producer's stated approach to this cuvée. All the domaine's 2021 wines were organically certified. Those details connect the wine's refined site character with the difficult year's patient vineyard work, giving this bottle a stronger identity than a generic Gevrey.
