Château Valandraud Saint Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé 2019
Vintage Character
The 2019 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé Château Valandraud exemplifies the richness and sophistication of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is widely recognized as outstanding, with a warm, sunny growing season balanced by cool nights, resulting in wines of impressive ripeness, freshness, and structure.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
Awarded a remarkable 96 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, this Merlot-driven blend, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, opens with expressive aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, violets, and subtle graphite and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, offering layers of velvety tannins that envelop flavors of dark chocolate, licorice, and blackberry compote, while a lively acidity and mineral nuance carry through a persistent, harmonious finish. The wine’s depth and complexity make it an exceptional partner for slow-cooked lamb shank, roast duck breast, or a selection of aged cheeses such as Comté, each pairing highlighting its savory character and layered richness.
Winery Background
Château Valandraud was established in 1989 by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, who transformed a modest plot into one of Saint-Émilion’s most acclaimed estates, earning a reputation as pioneers of the "garagiste" movement. The vineyards are situated on clay-limestone soils in the heart of Saint-Émilion, a terroir that imparts both power and aromatic intensity to the predominantly Merlot blend. The estate is known for its meticulous approach, including low yields, manual harvesting, and rigorous fruit selection, ensuring only the highest quality grapes are used. Combining innovative techniques with traditional craftsmanship, Château Valandraud has set a benchmark for quality and individuality in Bordeaux, consistently producing wines celebrated for their texture, vibrancy, and long-term aging potential.
