Vintage Character The 2019 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval is the estate’s red second wine from Saint-Émilion. Rather than coming from one fixed parcel, its blend can draw on grapes selected across the Cheval Blanc vineyard, allowing the team to shape a distinct wine while preserving the estate’s emphasis on Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The warm 2019 season delivered ripe fruit with strong aromatic definition and freshness.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Black cherry, plum, raspberry and violet lead the profile, with cedar, cocoa, spice and graphite appearing behind the fruit. The palate is medium-full, supple and energetic, carrying medium-high acidity and polished tannins into a savoury finish. Millesima’s exact-vintage page records 13% alcohol. The wine is approachable earlier than the grand vin but still has the structure to evolve, especially when stored in a cool, stable cellar.
Winery Background Cheval Blanc occupies distinctive gravel and clay soils near the boundary between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Le Petit Cheval is assembled through selection rather than a permanently assigned block, so its composition reflects the character of each vintage and the estate’s quality decisions. Pierre-Olivier Clouet leads the technical team. Serve this 2019 with roast duck, lamb, veal, beef tenderloin or mushroom dishes. A short decant will help its fruit, floral lift and savoury detail emerge without softening its balance. It rewards patient service in a large glass, where its aromatic detail, texture and finish can unfold without losing freshness.
