Château Valandraud 'Virginie de Valandraud' Saint Émilion 2023
Vintage Character
Château Valandraud 'Virginie de Valandraud' Saint Émilion 2023 belongs to a warm but far from straightforward Bordeaux vintage. Humid spring and early-summer conditions increased disease pressure across the region, and storms in late June were followed by a broadly favourable summer. Overall seasonal warmth supported ripening, though variable rainfall made vineyard attention and picking decisions important. Virginie was harvested from mid-September into early October. Its Merlot-dominant blend presents the year's ripe, generous side, with a rounded texture and ample fruit, while the supporting Cabernet varieties contribute another layer of structure and aromatic detail.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
Black cherry and currant aromas are joined by violet, incense and spicy oak. The palate is medium-full and voluptuous, with supple tannins framing the fruit and a touch of woody grip giving the finish definition. Its combination of perfume and richness would sit comfortably beside roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, or a mushroom and cheese tart. Keeping sauces savoury rather than sweet will help the wine's fruit remain distinct, while the food's texture can soften the impression of youthful oak.
Winery Background
Virginie was first created in 1992 and named after Jean-Luc Thunevin's daughter. It forms part of the Valandraud story begun by Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, who bought their first small vineyard parcel in 1989 and released the inaugural Valandraud in 1991. The family has remained closely involved in the work from vineyard to cellar. For the 2023 Virginie, maturation lasted eighteen months in new French oak. The resulting style is expressive and polished, with enough structural presence to accompany its generous fruit rather than presenting richness alone.
