Vintage Character Mollydooker 'The Scooter' Merlot 2023 comes from the Long Gully Road vineyard in McLaren Vale. Its season began with good winter rainfall, but continued wet and cold spring conditions delayed budburst and slowed the vines' early growth. Flowering ran late, and the cool summer pushed harvest further back. Cool, wet autumn weather then prolonged ripening once again. The sequence made 2023 a late season in McLaren Vale: delayed flowering, cool summer conditions and a damp autumn all lengthened the wait for ripe fruit, requiring patience right through the harvest period.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Cherry and forest-fruit aromas introduce the wine, followed by fresh plum and a sweet-berry impression on the palate. Nutmeg and cinnamon give the fruit a warm, gently spiced frame. Despite those ripe flavours, the wine is dry, with only 0.5 grams per litre of residual sugar. Delicate tannins and a silky texture keep the mouthfeel relaxed, allowing the fruit to carry through the finish. Roast pork with thyme, duck breast with a light berry sauce or mushroom risotto would each suit this softer structure. The pairings work with the wine's fruit and spice without overwhelming its refined texture.
Winery Background The Scooter's barrel programme combines 97% American and 3% French oak, using new wood alongside one- and two-year-old barrels. New barrels account for 26%, leaving ample room for fruit and texture to remain the main attractions. Mollydooker's owner and chief winemaker, Sarah Marquis, places considerable emphasis on palate balance and fruit intensity when selecting wines. Here the result is a distinctive Merlot within the producer's range: richly aromatic, gently spicy and approachable, with its single-vineyard source providing a clear geographical anchor.
