Vintage Character 2017 in Saint-Estèphe avoided the bad luck of years ending in seven, although a spell of frost in late April and rain before the harvest caused worry. The appellation was treated gently by nature and gave both quantity and quality. In 2017, the 'Frank Phélan' Saint Estèphe from Château Phélan Ségur reflects that season. Frank Phélan is the second wine of Château Phélan Ségur and has been made since 1986.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis lead, with cedar and a hint of cocoa. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity, fine tannins and a savoury finish. With age it can develop tobacco and savoury notes. Roast lamb, beef and mushroom dishes suit it. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. Cabernet Sauvignon gives structure, dark fruit and firm tannins, which is why it is often blended with softer varieties. Firm cheeses such as Comté also work, as do soy-braised dishes that are not too sweet.
Winery Background Château Phélan Ségur stands in the village of Saint-Estèphe above the Gironde estuary and was founded by an Irishman, Bernard Phelan. His son Frank, born in 1820, developed the estate, and the second wine, created in 1986, bears his name. Frank Phélan comes from about 15 hectares of old vines along with a selection of young vines and expresses another facet of the château's terroir. The estate says it respects the classic values of the château while showing another facet of its terroir. Bernard Phelan left Ireland as a young man to work as a wine broker in Bordeaux, and the estate passed to his son Frank when he died in 1841. The estate is currently owned by Philippe Van de Vyvere.
