Vintage Character Giant Steps 'Harry's Monster' 2020 comes from a Yarra Valley season that demanded patience. A cool, wet spring was followed by a dry December; a mild February brought several substantial rain events before more stable, moderate harvest weather. The estate reports that Merlot and Cabernet could then reach sound tannin ripeness. Fruit from Sexton's exposed, north-facing Warramate slopes was picked in March and April. The slow, cooler finish favours a Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, giving definition, fresh acidity and ripe, fine-grained tannin rather than heavy sweetness.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Blackcurrant, blood plum and a hint of cedar lead the aroma, with tobacco leaf adding a savoury edge, at 13.5% alcohol. The palate moves through blackberry and cranberry, supported by fine, firm tannins and lively acidity. Dried herbs and sage linger beyond the fruit on a persistent finish. The herbal edge offers contrast to the dark berries, while the wine's measured weight leaves room for food. It has enough grip for roast lamb with herbs, slow-cooked beef or a mushroom and lentil pie; a lightly charred steak also meets its dark-fruited core. Decant for an hour and serve at about 17 degrees.
Winery Background Phil Sexton established Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley in 1997, planting the steep Sexton site after looking for a place to grow expressive cool-climate fruit. Harry's Monster is unusual within a house especially associated with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir: it combines Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from that founding vineyard. For the 2020 wine, each variety was hand-picked and fermented separately after destemming and partial crushing. Natural fermentation in small open vessels and gravity-based cap work preceded French-oak maturation for fourteen months. The blend was assembled in winter 2021 and bottled by gravity that December.
