Vintage Character Mollydooker 'Blue Eyed Boy' Shiraz 2022 brings together fruit from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. In the McLaren Vale part of that harvest, a mild summer avoided the heatwave pressure often associated with warmer years. Neither January nor February recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. A warm autumn followed, supporting gradual ripening and delaying harvest, which extended across March and into April. This steady regional pattern favoured generous yet balanced reds. Blue Eyed Boy uses that setting to deliver an especially concentrated, fruit-filled Shiraz with a plush, flowing texture.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Blueberry and fresh plum introduce the aroma, with mocha cream adding an immediate sense of richness. The palate develops through layers of berries and anise, finishing with a creamy chocolate note. Gentle tannins keep the substantial body supple, so the wine's power is expressed mainly through fruit concentration and length rather than harsh grip. Its generous alcohol level makes a slightly cool serving temperature particularly helpful. Braised beef, roast venison or black-pepper beef would suit the depth of flavour. The first two emphasise the dark-fruit richness, while the last picks up the wine's spicy edge.
Winery Background The fruit comes from several named sites, including Joppich, Long Gully Road, Home G Block, Gateway and Coppermine Road. The 2022 barrel programme used American oak exclusively, divided between 54% new and 46% one-year-old barrels. That substantial oak component contributes the creamy, mocha-toned background without obscuring the main berry character. The cuvée is named after Sarah Marquis's son Luke and sits within Mollydooker's family range. Under Sarah's leadership, it represents the estate's focus on fruit intensity, polished texture and balance in a particularly generous form.
