Vintage Character Mollydooker 'Enchanted Path' Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 combines fruit from the Gateway and Rivers Lane vineyards in McLaren Vale. The year began with generous winter rainfall, followed by a persistently cold, wet spring that delayed budburst and early vine growth. Late flowering and a cool summer pushed harvest back, while cool, wet autumn weather extended ripening further. Those conditions demanded patience and careful vineyard work. In 2023, McLaren Vale's late flowering and cool summer led into a protracted autumn ripening period, so harvest decisions followed a slower seasonal timetable than in the region's warmer, earlier years.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Wild berries and fresh plum lead the aroma, supported by cinnamon and dark chocolate. Pomegranate, cherry and anise add smaller details before the palate develops into blackberry, liquorice and mocha, with a delicate vanilla accent. Fine but expansive tannins give the wine presence without making the mouthfeel coarse. The finish is long, carrying both fruit and the warmer spice notes. Grilled striploin, slow-roasted lamb or aubergine with lentils would each work well, offering savoury flavours and enough substance for this generous blend. A little air allows the aromatic layers to become easier to distinguish.
Winery Background The wine was barrel fermented and matured in 93% American and 7% French oak. New barrels made up 84% of the programme, with the remainder one year old, creating a substantial framework for the fruit. Enchanted Path belongs to Mollydooker's Love range and reflects a selection based on fruit intensity and palate balance. Owner and chief winemaker Sarah Marquis directs that philosophy. The result combines two classic Australian red-wine varieties with a specific pair of McLaren Vale vineyard sources, giving its rich style a clearly defined origin.
