Vintage Character Yalumba 'The Octavius' Shiraz 2019 reflects a Barossa season in which low yields helped concentrate the fruit. The preceding winter was cool and received less rain than usual, while frost, hail and wind around flowering reduced the crop. A mild, dry growing season followed, producing intensely flavoured Shiraz with a firm tannic framework. Picking ran from late February into mid-March. With 55% of the fruit coming from Eden Valley and 45% from Barossa Valley, the vintage combines muscular fruit with an energetic, savoury edge rather than relying on sweetness alone.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Dark plum, black cherry and blackberry lead the aromas, followed by vanilla spice, chocolate, black pepper and praline. On the palate, concentrated blackberry and blackcurrant flavours meet sage, ginger and roasted-nut notes. Fine, chocolate-like tannins give the rich fruit definition, with a long finish that brings spice and savoury detail back into focus. Pair it with rosemary-roasted lamb, grilled beef with mushrooms, or braised beef cheeks. Some air before drinking can help the dense fruit unfold, and the wine's structure also rewards patient cellaring under suitable conditions.
Winery Background The Octavius takes its name from the small, 100-litre octave barrels made in Yalumba's own cooperage. Old vines are central to the wine, with the oldest contributing Eden Valley vineyard planted in 1854 and the 2019 selection averaging 104 years of age. For this release, maturation lasted 19 months in French oak: 25% new hogsheads and barriques, with the remainder in older octaves and barriques. These choices bring together longstanding vineyard resources and an oak regime intended to support the fruit. The interplay of two Barossa subregions gives the wine both depth and a distinctly peppery, structured character.
