Vintage Character
Château Beychevelle Saint Julien Grand Cru Classé 2008, a fourth growth in Saint-Julien, emerged from a notably unsettled season. Gloomy, wet conditions persisted through much of the period from March to mid-September, slowing development and increasing pressure on vineyard work. Harvest was consequently late, running from 30 September to 16 October. Extended ripening allowed the estate to retain freshness while developing fruit definition. The blend gives Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot almost equal roles, at 48% and 47%, with Cabernet Franc completing it. Its character is measured and aromatic rather than dominated by conspicuous warmth or excessive weight.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
Blackcurrant and red-fruit notes are accompanied by spice, mocha and a cool, minty accent. The palate has a smooth, almost velvety progression, with fine tannins giving shape to the fruit rather than an aggressively hard edge. Savoury oak and freshness continue into a balanced finish. Roast duck with mushrooms, herb-roasted lamb or a firm aged cheese would suit this combination of fruit and restraint. With mature bottles, decanting should respond to the wine in the glass: separating sediment may be helpful, but prolonged aeration is not automatically beneficial to every bottle.

Philippe Blanc, who arrived in 1995, was already leading the estate during this vintage. The 2008 technical account emphasises the demands of the growing season and careful judgement at harvest. The near-equal balance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot gives this Saint-Julien a distinctive meeting of structure and suppleness.
