La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion 2006 is the second red wine of La Mission Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan. The estate describes a hot, dry spring and summer with marked climatic contrasts, circumstances that made close vineyard attention important. Picking extended from 7 to 29 September, allowing the team to work through the fruit progressively. The final blend is unusually Cabernet-led for a second wine, combining 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc and 22% Merlot. Its ripe fruit and refined framework reflect a season requiring selection and timing, not simply an uninterrupted run of easy weather.

Red-fruit aromas meet a restrained oak background, while the palate shows a supple entry followed by a more defined tannic outline. The texture is refined rather than massive, and the finish keeps the fruit and savoury elements connected. Roast chicken with mushrooms, grilled lamb cutlets or a lentil dish with roasted root vegetables would each bring out a different side of the wine. A mature bottle is best approached with attention to its condition: taste first, then give it only the air it needs. The pleasure here is balance and detail rather than sheer concentration.
