Château Calon Ségur Saint Estèphe 2004
Vintage Character
Château Calon Ségur Saint Estèphe 2004 comes from a season that rewarded patience rather than extreme heat. Across Bordeaux, a cool, wet April slowed growth, while a rainy August interrupted ripening. September brought sunshine, warmer days and cool nights, allowing the fruit to recover while retaining acidity. On Calon's gravel over clay, drainage is an important part of the vineyard's character. The third-growth wine reflects the more classical balance of 2004: moderate weight, lively freshness and a savoury edge, with less concentration than the estate's richest years.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
Cherry and currant fruit sit alongside roasted herbs and earthy notes, with cedar, coffee and clove adding mature complexity. The palate has a measured, medium-bodied shape rather than an imposing density, and the tannins have been described as relatively gentle. A fresh finish keeps the fruit and savoury flavours in balance. This is a mature claret for a meal, especially roast lamb with rosemary, beef braised with mushrooms, or Cantonese roast goose. Serve slightly cool and pour carefully to leave any sediment behind, allowing the bottle to open gradually in the glass.
Winery Background
The 2004 belongs to Calon's Gasqueton-family era, before the estate changed ownership in 2012. Its familiar heart emblem recalls the Marquis de Ségur's attachment to Calon, linking the label to a long local history. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the wine's identity, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc also recorded for this vintage. Gravel slopes over a substantial clay subsoil contribute to the estate's combination of strength and finesse. Oak maturation and patient bottle ageing develop the layered, traditional character that makes Calon a distinctive expression of Saint Estèphe.
