2021 Barnett Merlot from Spring Mountain District in Napa Valley is an estate-grown mountain red that shows why this AVA is prized for structure and definition. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as excellent in Napa: a dry growing season and naturally small crop delivered concentrated fruit, firm architecture, and notable clarity. Barnett’s vineyards sit high on Spring Mountain above the valley floor, where rocky volcanic soils, cooler elevations, and large day-to-night temperature swings help preserve freshness while building depth and tannic backbone.

Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
On the nose, this Merlot leads with black cherry, ripe plum, blueberry, violet, and a distinct mineral lift, followed by darker notes of cocoa, espresso, cedar, and sweet spice. The palate is full-bodied yet controlled, with layered dark fruit, mountain herbs, supple richness, and finely grained tannins that carry into a long, savory finish. It pairs beautifully with herb-crusted lamb, grilled ribeye with rosemary, or wild mushroom risotto.

Barnett Vineyards was founded in 1983 by Hal and Fiona Barnett and has become one of Spring Mountain’s benchmark estates, known for producing wines of mountain intensity and precision. The estate focuses on low-yielding hillside vineyards and a transparent, site-driven philosophy, with careful farming and hand-harvesting suited to the steep terrain. Under winemaker David Tate, fruit is handled with restraint to preserve terroir expression, and élevage in French oak adds polish without obscuring the vineyard’s natural power.
