Cline Cellars Bridgehead Zinfandel Contra Costa County California 2018
Vintage Character
Cline Family Cellars Bridgehead Zinfandel 2018 comes from Contra Costa County, a single-vineyard California bottling sourced from Oakley’s historic sand-grown vines. The 2018 vintage was widely regarded as strong across much of California, with a long, even growing season that helped grapes reach full ripeness while retaining freshness and shape. What sets this origin apart is its deep Delhi sand, a rare terroir that is naturally resistant to phylloxera and allows many old, own-rooted Zinfandel vines to survive, giving the wine both intensity and a distinctive lifted, dusty character.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
The wine opens with ripe blackberry, dark plum, raspberry compote and violet, followed by notes of vanilla, toasted spice and a touch of earth. On the palate it is full-bodied and generous, with supple medium tannins, ample dark-fruit weight and enough acidity to keep the richness in check, finishing with peppery spice and a warm sandy-mineral echo. Its bold yet balanced profile makes it a natural partner for grilled lamb chops, smoked pork ribs, or mushroom pizza.
Winery Background
Founded in 1982 by Fred and Nancy Cline, Cline Family Cellars built its reputation on characterful Rhône varieties and old-vine California sites, while remaining family-owned and closely tied to sustainable farming. For wines such as Bridgehead, the estate highlights the identity of historic Contra Costa vineyards through site-specific sourcing, careful fruit selection and a relatively restrained approach that aims to preserve vineyard expression rather than overwhelm it. This focus on heritage vineyards, allied to a long commitment to protecting old vines rooted in ancient sandy soils, is what makes Cline especially compelling for lovers of classic California Zinfandel.
