Colgin Cellars Napa Valley 'IX Estate' Syrah 2022
Vintage Character
2022 Colgin Cellars 'IX Estate' Syrah is a Napa Valley cult wine from Pritchard Hill, an area prized for producing intensely structured, site-driven reds from steep, rocky slopes. The 2022 vintage in Napa was shaped by drought and a September heat spike, concentrating fruit and naturally reducing yields; in the right hands, it produced powerful, focused wines with notable depth. Colgin’s estate site on Pritchard Hill is distinguished by volcanic soils, hillside exposures, and an elevated position above the valley floor, all of which help give this Syrah its signature combination of dark-fruited richness, savory lift, and firm mineral tension.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
This is a full-bodied, dry Syrah with a dramatic aromatic range of blackberry, blueberry, black plum, violet, cracked pepper, smoked meat, olive tapenade, and cocoa. The palate is dense yet controlled, layering ripe blue and black fruit with graphite, incense, savory earth, and subtle oak spice; the texture is polished, the tannins substantial but refined, and the finish long, resonant, and faintly gamey in the best Northern Rhône-inspired sense. It pairs beautifully with rosemary-grilled lamb chops, dry-aged ribeye, or char siu pork, dishes that can meet its concentration and amplify its savory complexity.
Winery Background
Founded in 1992 by Ann Colgin, Colgin Cellars has become one of Napa Valley’s benchmark luxury estates, known for tiny-production wines that unite California intensity with precision and longevity. The IX Estate is the winery’s own Pritchard Hill property, farmed with meticulous attention to vineyard detail and low yields to capture site transparency rather than sheer scale. In the cellar, Colgin’s style emphasizes careful fruit selection, measured extraction, and élevage in French oak, shaping wines that are opulent yet disciplined. What sets the estate apart is its ability to render hillside Napa fruit with both grandeur and finesse, making this Syrah one of the region’s most distinctive expressions of the variety.
