2020 Lino Maga Barbacarlo, the celebrated red from Oltrepò Pavese in Lombardy, comes from the family’s historic Barbacarlo hill, a monopole whose steep, sun-exposed slopes help give the wine its singular depth and tension. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as balanced and generous in northern Italy, with steady ripening conditions supporting both aromatic clarity and supple structure. Drawn from a traditional field blend of Croatina, Uva Rara, and Ughetta, this site’s clay-limestone hillside setting is central to Barbacarlo’s character, yielding a wine that is at once wild, savory, and firmly rooted in place.

On the nose, Barbacarlo opens with black cherry, crushed blackberry, plum skin, violet and dried herbs, followed by balsamic tones, sweet spice and an earthy, slightly feral complexity that longtime admirers prize. The palate is full-bodied yet energetic, with bright acidity carrying dark fruit, licorice, underbrush and a gently grippy tannic frame into a persistent, spicy finish.
