Vintage Character Castello Tricerchi Brunello di Montalcino A.D. A.D. 1441 DOCG 2017 is a DOCG Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese from Castello Tricerchi. An early spring and late frost risk preceded Montalcino's exceptionally hot, prolonged drought. Water stress continued until welcome September rain, and growers had to watch the small, concentrated berries closely and adjust picking and extraction. Tricerchi hand-harvested at the beginning of October. For this Brunello, the concentration calls for a firm tannic frame and measured freshness, shaped by northern-slope fruit and long maceration.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing It shows ripe cherry, citrus, sweet spice and a darker earthy undertone. Dry and firmly structured, the palate has integrated tannins and a notably persistent finish; acidity prevents the hot year from feeling entirely heavy. Roast venison, slow-braised beef and mature pecorino are natural companions. Decant according to the bottle's condition, letting the mature fruit unfold while avoiding unnecessary warmth. This is a concentrated register, but the cherry-citrus lift remains important.
Winery Background 1441 takes its name from the year the castle was completed. It is a hand-selected Sangiovese from Vigna del Castello and Vigna del Velo, followed by long indigenous-yeast fermentation and about three years in large Slavonian oak. The north-facing, limestone-clay and sandy vineyards temper the Tuscan sun. The Squarcia descendants still occupy the historic property, and its cool old cellars provide a traditional setting for slow maturation. It is more selective than the estate's Rosso, with the structure and cellar time expected of a Brunello.
