Vintage Character 2021 followed the disrupted 2020 with a calm season, as temperatures stayed stable through the summer. Ongoing drought reduced yields but intensified flavours, so quantities are down. There is a lot of excitement about the vintage among Napa Valley Cabernet specialists. In 2021, the The Mascot from The Mascot reflects that season. The Mascot is a Napa Valley Cabernet-led wine from seven hillside vineyards, the younger vines of Harlan Estate, Promontory and BOND.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Blackcurrant, blackberry and plum lead, with cedar, cocoa and graphite. It is dry, full-bodied, with medium-high acidity and high tannins. The palate is full-bodied and dry, with medium-high acidity and ripe, firm tannins. With age it can develop tobacco, leather and forest floor. Roast lamb, braised beef short rib and char siu suit its structure. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. Cabernet Sauvignon gives structure, dark fruit and firm tannins, which is why it is often blended with softer varieties. Firm cheeses such as Comté also work, as do soy-braised dishes that are not too sweet.
Winery Background The Mascot was introduced in 2013 by Will Harlan, as his entry into the wine business, and it is made from the younger vines of three Napa Valley properties. Those properties are Harlan Estate, founded by his father, Promontory, and the five small hillside vineyards of the BOND portfolio, making seven hillside vineyards in all. Lots from these sites are assembled into one Napa Valley wine rather than released as separate vineyard bottlings. Cory Empting is the winemaker listed for the wine. This wine gives an earlier look at the farming that stands behind its better-known sister wines. Will Harlan also leads Promontory, and the BOND winery released its first vintage fifteen years after Harlan Estate.
