Vintage Character The 2022 growing season at Roserock in Eola-Amity Hills was disrupted. Budbreak came on schedule in early April, but an Arctic air mass then brought snow and frost to the estate. Cool, damp weather slowed the vines and left development two to four weeks behind by June. Sunshine and above-average warmth near harvest allowed the fruit to regain ripeness. Those contrasting phases give the Zéphirine its blend of generous berry fruit and a poised, structured texture. Rather than a uniformly warm, easy vintage, 2022 was a recovery from a difficult spring, and the wine carries that energy in its lively finish.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The nose brings fresh raspberry and marionberry, with rose petals, violets and a lift of citrus. On the palate, juicy strawberry meets cardamom and a measured thread of spice. The texture is silky, yet the wine has enough shape to carry a long finish, with medium tannins and medium-high acidity. The floral detail stays clear beside the ripe fruit. It earned 97 from Jeb Dunnuck, 94 from Wine Spectator and 93 from Vinous. Pair it with duck confit, mushroom risotto or roast salmon: the fruit meets the richness of the duck, while the lively profile keeps the mushroom and fish dishes from feeling heavy.
Winery Background The Drouhin family established its Oregon winery in 1987, bringing its Burgundy experience to the Willamette Valley. Roserock, acquired in 2013, lies in the cooler Eola-Amity Hills, where volcanic soils and the Van Duzer corridor, which channels cool Pacific air into the hills, shape the site. The vineyard is LIVE-certified sustainable. Winemaker Véronique Drouhin makes Zéphirine as a barrel selection from Roserock, not as the estate's standard Pinot Noir blend. Its name refers to the fragrant Zéphirine Drouhin climbing rose, a fitting link to the wine's floral character and to the family's preference for finesse over sheer weight.
