Domaine Drouhin Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2023
Vintage Character
Domaine Drouhin Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2023 is a Pinot Noir from Dundee Hills, Oregon. At the Dundee Hills estate, budbreak was late on April 30, then sudden heat and little rain compressed the time to flowering to less than forty-five days. Picking began in late September; notable rain arrived near month-end before harvest finished on October 5. Healthy fruit survived that abrupt shift from a slow start to rapid growth. The interaction of fast summer development and September rain makes picking decisions more consequential than a simple warm-year label would suggest. This is the core estate Pinot Noir, not the tighter barrel selection of Laurène. The season's temperature and rain pattern therefore speak through a broader cross-section of the family's hillside fruit, with fine tannin and fruit clarity as the desired balance.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
Cherry, raspberry, rose and gentle spice make a lifted nose; earth and discreet oak add a quieter register. The palate is dry and medium bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and a lingering red-fruit finish. Roast duck, mushroom risotto and quail suit the wine's savoury side without obscuring its floral detail.
Winery Background
The Drouhin family established its Dundee Hills estate in 1987, with Véronique Boss-Drouhin directing Oregon winemaking. Its gravity-flow cellar and careful sorting reflect a preference for gentle handling of Pinot Noir. The family draws on Burgundy experience while treating Oregon's volcanic hillside as a place with its own character. This bottling introduces the estate itself, whereas Laurène and Louise undergo stricter barrel selection. A measured approach to fermentation and oak lets the fruit, acidity and tannin communicate the season without imposing an unnecessarily heavy style.
