Vintage Character 2023 is a rare Burgundy vintage that offers both quality and quantity, with ripe fruit in a large crop. Summer weather was unstable, but a sunny, hot end to the season ripened the fruit while keeping alcohol moderate. Red and white alike show a balance in which alcohol, acidity, tannin and fruit sit in harmony, and the wines are charming young. In 2023, the Monthélie 'Les Vignes Rondes' Premier Cru from Domaine Gauffroy reflects that season. Monthélie is a village next to Meursault and Volnay and gives Pinot Noir with a fresh, supple style. Premier cru is the level just below grand cru and is reserved for named sites of recognised quality.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Red cherry, redcurrant and violet come with a light spice. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate is fresh and supple, with fine tannins and a savoury finish. It can show forest floor and dried flowers with age. Roast chicken, duck and mushroom dishes work well with it. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape that shows differences of site and vintage clearly, which is why Burgundy takes vineyard names so seriously. Firm cheeses such as Comté also work, as do soy-braised dishes that are not too sweet.
Winery Background Domaine Gauffroy Marc & Fils has been in the centre of Meursault since 1938, and Nicolas Gauffroy represents the third generation. The family's focus is almost entirely on white wines, mainly from Meursault and Puligny. Alongside the family label, Nicolas now makes his own range under his own name, and he works beside his father in both vineyard and cellar. Les Vignes Rondes is a premier cru site, and the wine is an unusual red from a house that is known for whites.
