Kilikanoon Riesling 'Morts Block' 2023
Vintage Character
The 2023 vintage in Clare Valley produced Rieslings of remarkable clarity and vibrancy, thanks to a mild growing season with cool nights and steady warmth that fostered crisp acidity and focused aromatics. Kilikanoon Mort's Block Riesling 2023 exemplifies the region’s reputation for purity and finesse, offering a lively bouquet of lime zest, lemon blossom, and crunchy green apple, complemented by delicate hints of wet slate and jasmine.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
On the palate, the wine is crisp and linear, showcasing zesty citrus flavors alongside subtle notes of white peach and mineral undertones, all enveloped in a silky texture that extends into a lingering, mouthwatering finish. This single-vineyard Riesling pairs beautifully with fresh oysters, goat’s cheese salad, or the gentle spice of Sichuan-style steamed fish, each dish highlighting the wine’s refreshing acidity and vivid character. The style and structure of this wine make it a classic example of Clare Valley Riesling, with excellent potential for graceful aging.
Winery Background
Established in 1997, Kilikanoon has earned its place among Clare Valley’s leading producers through a commitment to traditional winemaking and attentive vineyard management. Mort’s Block, named in tribute to founder Kevin Mitchell’s father, is distinguished by its ancient slate soils and elevated position, which contribute to the wine’s distinctive minerality and finesse. The estate follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the true character of the vineyard to shine, while sustainable practices underscore their dedication to preserving the unique terroir. Kilikanoon’s focus on site expression and balanced winemaking has set a benchmark for Clare Valley Riesling, consistently delivering wines celebrated for their clarity, balance, and age-worthy structure.
