Planeta Eruzione 1614 Carricante Sicilia DOC 2022
Vintage Character
Planeta Eruzione 1614 Carricante Sicilia DOC 2022 is a distinctive white from Sicily, drawn from Planeta’s high-elevation Etna project and inspired by the historic 1614 eruption that shaped this landscape. The 2022 vintage was marked by warm Sicilian conditions, yet Etna’s altitude and ventilation helped preserve freshness and precision, making it a particularly attractive expression of the site. Its character is rooted in volcanic soils, strong diurnal shifts, and mountain-grown fruit, all of which give the wine its lifted aromatics, taut structure, and pronounced mineral edge.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
The Wine Advocate awarded the 2022 vintage 92 points, underscoring the wine’s balance of mountain energy and textural polish. The nose opens with green apple, lemon peel, white flowers and wet stone, followed by hints of citrus oil and a lightly smoky, saline note. On the palate it is dry, bright and finely etched, with Carricante’s natural acidity carrying flavors of orchard fruit, crushed rock and subtle honeyed nuance into a long, chalky finish. It pairs especially well with grilled sea bass, linguine alle vongole, or sushi and sashimi.
Winery Background
Planeta is one of the modern standard-bearers of Sicilian wine, a family producer that helped reveal the island’s diverse terroirs through estate vineyards in multiple districts. At Etna, the focus is on expressing altitude, lava-derived soils and local identity with clarity rather than weight. Fruit for Eruzione 1614 comes from the Sciaranuova area, where careful viticulture and hand-harvesting support precision in the cellar. Fermentation and aging are handled to preserve aromatic detail and mineral tension, allowing this bottling to stand out as a refined, terroir-driven interpretation of Carricante.
