Vintage Character Tenute dei Ciclopi Etna Bianco Superiore 2022 presents Carricante in a year that moved from early concern to a promising harvest. After a wetter winter, spring became dry and the beginning of summer brought repeated heat and drought. August rain then refreshed the vines and helped the grapes complete aromatic and phenolic ripening. Across Etna, growers reported healthy fruit with both maturity and acidity, while individual slopes retained their own differences. That context suits this white's combination of citrus intensity, a slender palate and pronounced freshness, with the grape's character expressed through a mineral rather than opulent register.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Lime and bergamot give the nose a bright, sharply drawn opening, followed by linden blossom, dried Mediterranean herbs and delicate caper-flower notes. Saline and lightly sulphurous impressions add depth without obscuring the citrus. The palate is lean, incisive and distinctly savoury, with acidity carrying the flavours into a long, persistent finish. Serve it with oysters, grilled sea bass, or a lemon and herb risotto. The first two highlight its sea-salt character, while the risotto provides a gentle textural contrast that leaves the wine's freshness and aromatic precision intact.
Winery Background This cuvée is made entirely from Carricante cultivated as bush vines on volcanic sands containing lapilli and pumice. Whole-grape pressing is followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts, lasting approximately thirteen to fifteen days. The wine spends twelve months in large wooden vessels before filtration and further bottle resting. The aim is a composed, finely drawn white with room for texture but no need for overtly woody flavours. Within the estate's range, Superiore stands out for its narrow, energetic shape and the clear persistence of its citrus and saline elements.
