Vintage Character The 2013 Berncasteler Doctor Auslese comes from a notably late Mosel season. A long, cold, wet spring delayed Riesling budbreak and pushed flowering into late June and July. Warmth in July and August then helped the vines recover, and moisture followed by a warm October encouraged noble rot. The steep, south-southwest-facing Doctor vineyard catches the sun on weathered slate, a real advantage when spring has put the season behind schedule. What defines 2013 is late ripening, selective picking and the freshness Riesling can retain, which here balances the Auslese richness and gives the wine its poise.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The nose opens on lime, green apple and ripe white peach, with slate and floral notes, and honeyed, dried-citrus tones that deepen with age and a touch of petrol typical of mature Riesling. On the palate, Auslese richness is checked by high Mosel acidity, leaving a long finish that feels poised rather than sugary. At only 8% alcohol it is light-bodied and delicate. Blue cheese, a fruit tart or roast duck with an unsweetened citrus sauce each work for a different reason: salt, fruit or savoury depth answers the wine's concentrated Riesling character. Serve well chilled, around 8 degrees, in a small glass.
Winery Background Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef traces its Mosel winegrowing tradition back more than 375 years and holds vines in the Berncasteler Doctor, one of Germany's most celebrated and expensive white-wine sites. Legend says the vineyard's name goes back to the sick Elector Boemund of Trier, who was cured by its wine. The estate describes the site as exceptionally steep, with stony, loamy weathered schist, cultivated by hand where machinery cannot work. Maximilian Ferger is the winemaker, and the old Doctor cellar, carved beneath the vineyard, offers a cool place for ageing the wines.
