Vintage Character The 2023 season on the Mosel brought pronounced swings. Hot, dry June weather stressed young vines, heavy rain from late July refilled the berries, and exceptionally warm September nights drove rapid ripening. The German Wine Institute records a compressed harvest and a Riesling crop that kept an effective balance of acidity and sweetness when selection was careful. For an Auslese from Bernkasteler Lay, that sequence gives generous fruit and sweetness with an energetic counterweight. The Lay vineyard looks west-southwest across the Mosel over fine, decomposed slate, and its afternoon light and soil frame the year.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Ripe pear, peach and citrus marmalade lead the nose, with lime, green apple, slate-spice and floral notes as the wine opens. The palate carries the richer fruit expected of Auslese, with high acidity keeping the sweetness articulate and the finish long. At just 7.5% alcohol it is light and delicate, and it is a sweet wine, unlike the dry Doctor GG. Blue cheese, baked apple with restrained sugar or a gently spiced duck dish let the sweet-acid structure work in different ways. Serve in a modest glass at a cool temperature, and notice how the fruit broadens as it warms.
Winery Background The Erben Müller-Burggraef estate traces centuries of Mosel Riesling growing and counts Bernkasteler Lay among its principal steep vineyards. The estate places the site by the river at Bernkastel, facing west to southwest, with fine weathered slate. The estate also holds vines in the famed Berncasteler Doctor, and the Lay offers a different, slightly softer expression of Bernkastel Riesling. Hand work on steep slopes is part of the producer's approach, Maximilian Ferger is the winemaker, and the historic cellar beneath the Doctor vineyard is where the estate stores its wines.
