Vintage Character The 2017 Berncasteler Doctor Auslese belongs to a Mosel vintage in which early budbreak was followed by damaging late-April frost. A warm, dry end to spring allowed early flowering, but rain in July and August increased pressure before an exceptionally early harvest. The VDP reported sharply reduced yields in the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer, along with Rieslings of good potential acidity and concentration. The Doctor's south-southwest orientation and steep, slate-rich slope help explain how the Riesling reached ripeness while keeping a defined acidic edge, so the Auslese combines richness with a lively, focused finish.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Ripe apricot and white peach meet lime, green apple, citrus zest and a floral lift, with slate and fine lees underneath. Auslese brings a rich mid-palate, while the high acidity of the 2017 Mosel season keeps the finish lively and long. At 7.5% alcohol it is delicate and light. Honeyed and petrol notes may develop with age, but young the wine is at its most interesting when fruit concentration and mineral spice stay distinct. Pair it with pâté, blue cheese or an apple tart that is not too sweet, where salty or savoury contrast and echoing fruit both work. Serve cool and let the glass warm slowly.
Winery Background Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef is one of the two historically related Thanisch houses, and the full family name distinguishes it from the other branch. The estate traces more than 375 years of winegrowing and describes the Berncasteler Doctor as a steep, stony schist site directly above Bernkastel, with a gradient of up to about 70 percent that gives all-day sunshine. Hand labour is necessary on many of the estate's slopes, and its old cellar lies beneath the Doctor vineyard. This wine joins that renowned site with a season that favoured concentration and clear acidity.
