Vintage Character The 2006 Berncasteler Doctor Beerenauslese reflects a Mosel vintage that favoured concentrated, botrytis-influenced sweet wines but was exceptionally demanding at harvest. Heat in July advanced ripeness, cooler and wetter weather in August replenished the vines, and September moisture encouraged noble rot. Selective picking became crucial as berries shrivelled and sugar concentration rose. Beerenauslese means a selection of intensely ripe individual berries, so the season explains the wine's dense fruit and sweetness. The south-southwest-facing Doctor slope, with weathered slate and strong sun exposure, let the grapes build ripeness while Riesling acidity kept the balance.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Apricot preserve, baked peach and candied citrus lead the nose, with honey, slate and spice becoming more evident as the wine develops, plus lime and green apple freshness beneath. On the palate the style is concentrated and clearly sweet, yet high acidity cuts through the richness and carries a very long finish. At 8% alcohol it is light in body despite its intensity. Serve in small pours. Pair with blue cheese, a lightly sweetened apricot dessert or foie gras, where salt, fruit and savoury richness each show a different side of the wine. Avoid a dessert much sweeter than the wine, which would dull its fruit.
Winery Background Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef has a long Bernkastel Riesling history, going back more than 375 years, and holds vines in the Berncasteler Doctor. The estate describes that site as steep and stony, with schist-derived soil and extensive hand labour. The Doctor is among the most famous names in German wine, and tradition links it to the Elector Boemund of Trier, who was said to have been cured of illness by its wine. The estate's traditional Doctor cellar is carved beneath the slope, where cool, humid conditions suit the storage of mature wines such as this Beerenauslese.
