Château Pape Clément Blanc Pessac Léognan 2023
Vintage Character
Château Pape Clément Blanc Pessac Léognan 2023 reflects careful harvesting in a year that moved from damp spring weather to summer heat. Winter was cold and rainy, while a mild, humid spring increased vineyard disease pressure. The later hot, dry period included heatwaves, making the timing of white-grape picking particularly important. Harvesting ran from 23 August to 7 September in successive passes, selecting fruit as it reached the desired maturity. The wine's ripe centre is therefore balanced by a notably incisive line of acidity, while reduced oak influence allows its citrus and floral character to remain clearly expressed.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
White flowers, lemon oil and lemongrass give the bouquet a bright, detailed profile, with yellow-fruit and light almond notes adding breadth. The palate combines layered fruit with a sappy, lively feel, moving towards a focused, mouthwatering finish rather than a broad wash of sweetness. Sauvignon Blanc is supported by Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris and a small contribution of Muscadelle. Serve with roast turbot, chicken in a light cream sauce, or grilled prawns with citrus; these pairings offer enough substance for the wine's texture while respecting its fresh aromatic line.
Winery Background
Pape Clément's name recalls Bertrand de Goth, the future Pope Clement V, and a long-established vineyard in Pessac. Its white-wine production is distinct from the red, with clay-rich soils and Sémillon playing important roles. Grapes are picked selectively in several passes and pressed in stages so that the most balanced juice can be retained. Cellar decisions are adjusted to variety and vineyard origin, with several vessel types used for maturation. In 2023, the white was raised in a combination including barrels, larger wooden vessels and neutral containers. This approach supports texture and complexity without making oak the defining feature of the wine.
