Vintage Character Pierre Girardin Meursault 'Le Cromin' 2023 is a village Chardonnay from a season that combined generosity with freshness. Across Burgundy, a slightly delayed budburst helped vines escape spring frost, while favourable flowering encouraged a substantial crop. Summer brought alternating storms and heat, followed by sunny, unusually hot conditions around the start of harvest. Those conditions brought Chardonnay to full ripeness without erasing its refreshing balance. Le Cromin expresses that combination through substantial texture held in check by an especially energetic, mineral line: this is the brighter, more tightly focused side of a generally generous white Burgundy vintage.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Flint and a suggestion of struck match introduce citrus oil, green apple and a light smoky accent. The palate has weight and presence, but its brisk acidity and saline impression keep the fruit precisely outlined. Lemon and orchard fruit mingle with a little buttery richness, while the persistent, stony finish avoids a heavy impression. Try it with roast turbot, chicken in a light cream sauce, or a leek and goat's cheese tart. A broad white-wine glass and time to open in the glass should let its texture and aromatic detail come forward.
Winery Background Pierre-Vincent Girardin grew up learning beside his father, Vincent, and launched his first vintage in 2017. His approach combines family vineyard holdings with carefully chosen grower relationships, with an emphasis on organic vineyard practices and clear expression of individual sites. Le Cromin lies on clay-limestone soils in Meursault. Whole bunches are pressed before fermentation in specially commissioned 456-litre barrels, whose size helps moderate the influence of oak. The aim is Chardonnay with both substance and definition, allowing the vineyard to remain more prominent than the wood.
