Vintage Character Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne Montrachet 'Les Fairendes' Premier Cru 2024 brings a generous texture to a season better known for cool temperatures and persistent rain. Mildew and grey rot created difficult vineyard conditions across Burgundy, making healthy fruit a priority. Morey-Coffinet encouraged grass growth between its rows to compete with the vines for surplus water. The resulting estate wines retained freshness without sacrificing ripeness. In this Chardonnay from the Fairendes sector of Morgeot, the year's cool energy gives definition to a supple, rounded style rather than making the wine austere.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing White peach, apple and yellow plum give the nose a broad fruit range, joined by orange zest, acacia, almond and a restrained pastry note. A faint smoky spice adds another layer. Its gently waxy texture supplies volume, while a citrus line carries the fruit towards a long, finely shaped finish. The impression is fragrant and generous, with freshness holding everything together. Try roast guinea fowl with cream, grilled lobster with herb butter, or gently steamed crab with ginger. These dishes accommodate the wine's breadth without masking its more delicate fragrance.
Winery Background Domaine Morey-Coffinet was established in 1980 through the marriage of Fabienne Coffinet and Michel Morey, uniting vineyards inherited from two winegrowing families. Their son Thibault joined in 2000 and helped direct a gradual change in farming: herbicides were abandoned in 2002, organic certification followed in 2018, and biodynamic principles have been practised since 2015. Hand harvesting and careful sorting remain central. In the historic cellars, oak barrels sit alongside amphorae and egg-shaped vessels, with the choice of containers guided by balance and the character of each wine.
