Vintage Character Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne Montrachet 'En Cailleret' Premier Cru 2024 captures the mineral tension that emerged from a cool, rain-filled growing season. Wet conditions brought mildew and grey-rot pressure, while relatively low temperatures kept the year's character distinct from recent hot vintages. At the estate, grass between the rows was encouraged to compete for water, helping protect fruit quality. En Cailleret carries this freshness through a firm, stony structure, with ripe fruit providing substance rather than heaviness. Its length gives the vintage's restrained energy a particularly clear expression.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Lemon, pear and white flowers sit alongside a little peach and hazelnut, but the palate's chalky, stone-like impression is the defining feature. There is some breadth through the middle, followed by a taut, saline finish that extends the fruit. This is a concentrated yet refined white, with enough structure to reward patient cellaring. Pair it with roast turbot and butter sauce, scallops with cauliflower purée, or Cantonese steamed fish with restrained ginger. Each gives the wine's texture something to meet while respecting its precise, mineral ending.
Winery Background Domaine Morey-Coffinet was established in 1980 through the marriage of Fabienne Coffinet and Michel Morey, uniting vineyards inherited from two winegrowing families. Their son Thibault joined in 2000 and helped direct a gradual change in farming: herbicides were abandoned in 2002, organic certification followed in 2018, and biodynamic principles have been practised since 2015. Hand harvesting and careful sorting remain central. In the historic cellars, oak barrels sit alongside amphorae and egg-shaped vessels, with the choice of containers guided by balance and the character of each wine.
