Vintage Character The 2023 Bernkasteler Riesling Kabinett Trocken gives the same village and year a dry, light-footed register. Mosel Riesling passed through early-summer heat and drought, heavy rain beginning late in July and exceptionally warm September nights that quickened maturity. The German Wine Institute describes a rapid, selective harvest in which Riesling was one of the varieties able to keep fruit and acidity through the changing conditions. For a dry Kabinett the point is not maximum sugar but a crisp outline around ripe 2023 fruit. The village name covers a broader origin than the estate's separate Doctor or Lay vineyard bottlings.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Green apple, lemon and white peach lead the nose, with a quiet herbal or slate-like edge and fine lees. The palate is slender rather than rich, its fruit shaped by high acidity and a dry, clean finish, at 11.5% alcohol. A faint saline touch makes it useful at the table. Chill it, but avoid serving it so cold that the aromas disappear. Oysters, steamed fish with ginger or a simple goat-cheese salad suit this combination of freshness and modest weight. Compared with the Fruchtig Kabinett, Trocken has far less sweetness, so food need not counter residual sugar, and the wine's charm lies in how clearly it shows fruit without heaviness.
Winery Background The Thanisch estate known as Erben Müller-Burggraef has more than 375 years of winegrowing history in Bernkastel. Its holdings include steep slate-slope Riesling vineyards where manual work remains necessary, and it keeps a traditional cellar cut beneath the Doctor site. This village Kabinett is not Doctor wine, and the label's broader place name reflects that. What it offers is the estate's long experience with Mosel Riesling and with the dry Kabinett style, with Maximilian Ferger as winemaker, in a bottle that is made for everyday drinking and for food.
