Vintage Character The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 'Les Poissenots' Premier Cru came through spring frost, a wet Burgundy summer and a later September harvest. A warm flowering helped set the fruit, but rain through August demanded close attention to vine health, and a dry north wind then improved the final ripening period. Gevrey-Chambertin has a naturally firm Pinot Noir frame, so the 2021 season makes this Premier Cru feel especially exact and finely cut. Poissenot is one of the village's classified Premier Cru climats, distinct from the domaine's village Gevrey, and the wine shows depth with lively definition rather than a sun-heavy expansiveness.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Strawberry, mulberry, violet and rose are classic Gevrey markers, with licorice and underbrush as the wine matures. In this cooler year fresh cherry and raspberry lead, with darker fruit, clove and a savoury edge building behind them. Tannins have Gevrey's velvet texture and enough firmness to carry a lingering finish, at 14% alcohol. Roast duck, lamb in a light jus or mushrooms with herbs suit a wine that combines perfume and structure. Serve just below room temperature: gentle air helps a young bottle open, while the cooler serving protects the bright red-fruit line.
Winery Background Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot established the family domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1954. Vincent, in charge since 1989, and Fabien later enlarged its holdings, including Premier Cru sites such as Les Poissenots. The family's range moves from regional and village wines to named vineyards and Grands Crus, so this wine sits between breadth and a highly specific origin. The family ploughs its vineyards and avoids herbicides and insecticides. Its Premier Cru classification belongs to the vineyard, and the estate's long experience in Gevrey shapes the wine's structured, aromatic character.
