Vintage Character The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 'Vieilles Vignes' comes from a notably early Burgundy vintage. A mild winter brought budburst forward, flowering enjoyed excellent conditions, and a hot, dry summer included an August heatwave. Harvest began soon after mid-August, yet the regional wine board reports that grapes reached ripeness while keeping good acidity. For old-vine Pinot Noir in Chambolle-Musigny, that combination gives ripe fruit and a firm inner line rather than thinness or simple heat. The early calendar defines 2020: fruit developed quickly, which makes the retained freshness especially significant in this village cuvée.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Chambolle's classic violet, raspberry and strawberry register is joined here by darker cherry, ripe plum and gentle spice. Old vines give the dry palate a concentrated centre, while the appellation's silky tannins soften the edges. The contrast between generous fruit and a clean, persistent finish is what stands out, more than any single aroma. Roast duck, veal or a mushroom dish with herbs sit comfortably beside its texture. Young bottles benefit from moderate air and a serving temperature below that of a warm room, around 15 to 16 degrees. With age, forest floor and dried flowers can appear.
Winery Background The Geantet-Pansiot domaine began with Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1954. Vincent, in charge since 1989, and his son Fabien built a wider range that includes Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes as well as named Premier Cru sites. The old-vine label marks a selection distinct from the ordinary village bottling, though it is not a Premier Cru classification. The family sees deep-rooted mature vines as a link to place and continuity. In 2020 their fruit is a natural counterpoint to a rapid, warm growing season, giving this Chambolle both substance and grace.
