Vintage Character The 2002 season began with a cool May that delayed flowering, although flowering itself went well. July and August were dry and warm without violent storms, which gave a clean, healthy harvest. The wines are medium in body and fruit-forward, with firm tannins and acidity that kept them structured. Côte de Nuits wines of the year tend to be more intense and black-fruited than those of the Côte de Beaune. In 2002, the Pommard 'Les Epenots' Premier Cru from Domaine Parent reflects that season. Les Epenots is one of the best-known premier crus of Pommard, the village where Domaine Parent has its cellar and offices.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Dark plum, black cherry and a little spice come with earthy, mineral undertones. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate is structured and sturdy, with firm tannins typical of Pommard. Age brings leather, forest floor and truffle. Roast lamb, braised short rib and mushroom dishes work well with its firmness. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. With a bottle of this age, check the cork and fill level on opening, as storage history affects how it has developed.
Winery Background Domaine Parent was established in Pommard in 1803 by Claude Parent, and the family's presence in Burgundy dates back to the 17th century. Sisters Anne and Catherine Parent, the 12th generation, took over from their father Jacques, with Anne responsible for viticulture and winemaking and Catherine running the commercial side. The estate covers about 10 hectares, all in the Côte de Beaune, and produces wines at every level from regional to grand cru, mainly red, with Pommard as its signature. This wine is one of the sites that the domaine highlights for its Pinot Noir.
