Vintage Character 2022 followed the frost-hit 2021 and was a generous year, with a hot, dry summer and an early harvest that began before the end of August for some growers. The red wines combine the fruit and tannin of a warm season with the freshness and moderate body of a cooler one. In 2022, the Beaune 'Les Epenottes' Premier Cru from Domaine Parent reflects that season. Les Epenottes is a premier cru of Beaune that is known for sturdy, structured reds. Premier cru is the level just below grand cru and is reserved for named sites of recognised quality.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Red berries, cherry and violet lead, with light spice. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate is supple, with moderate tannins and a fresh, direct finish. It can add forest floor and dried flower notes with some years in bottle. Roast chicken, glazed pork and mushroom dishes work well. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape that shows differences of site and vintage clearly, which is why Burgundy takes vineyard names so seriously. Firm cheeses such as Comté also work, as do soy-braised dishes that are not too sweet.
Winery Background Domaine Parent was established in Pommard in 1803 by Claude Parent, and the family's presence in Burgundy dates back to the 17th century. Sisters Anne and Catherine Parent, the 12th generation, took over from their father Jacques, with Anne responsible for viticulture and winemaking and Catherine running the commercial side. The estate covers about 10 hectares, all in the Côte de Beaune, and produces wines at every level from regional to grand cru, mainly red, with Pommard as its signature. Domaine Parent makes it alongside its Pommard wines, a few kilometres from the village of Pommard.
