Vintage Character The 2021 Beaune 'Les Grèves' Premier Cru comes from a very different Burgundy season than 2020. Spring frost restricted yields in parts of the region, and rain from late June into early August kept vineyard teams busy with canopy and disease management. A dry interval and a north wind in mid-August then helped the Pinot Noir ripen gradually before the later September harvest. The regional wine board describes 2021 reds as finer and more delicate than powerful. On Grèves' southeast-facing mid-slope, light gravelly ground matures early, and in this cooler year that exposure helped the fruit ripen without losing freshness. Vinous scored it 90 to 92.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The domaine's Beaune Grèves shows a register of mixed red and black berries, gentle spice and a camphor-like high note. In 2021 the red fruit and floral lift speak first, with darker fruit in support rather than in command. The dry palate carries firm but fine tannin, a mineral edge and the sustained acidity that keeps a cool-year Burgundy lively, at 14% alcohol. Duck breast with cherries, roast chicken with thyme or wild-mushroom pasta respect this lighter balance. Serve slightly below room temperature, and give a young bottle some air.
Winery Background The Grèves parcel sits at the steepest point of Beaune's mid-slope, on sand, small stones and clay-limestone, so its position is not interchangeable with a generic Beaune label. Génot-Boulanger was founded in Meursault in 1974 and later expanded across several Burgundy villages, and its whole estate has been certified organic since the 2018 vintage. For its reds the team harvests by hand, destems the Pinot Noir, ferments with indigenous yeasts and extracts gently. Maturation in mostly used oak is followed by stainless steel, and the wine is bottled without filtration.
