Vintage Character The 2020 Beaune 'Les Grèves' Premier Cru bears the imprint of Burgundy's exceptionally early season. A mild winter advanced budburst into March, before settled flowering and a hot, dry summer brought the berries swiftly towards ripeness. An August heatwave made picking decisions especially important, yet the regional wine board records ripe fruit with acidity intact as harvest began unusually early. Grèves sits on Beaune's steep, southeast-facing mid-slope, where the domaine says light gravelly soils favour early maturity. The vintage's generous fruit needs that line of freshness to keep the Premier Cru composed.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The estate describes a broad spectrum of red and dark berries with sweet spice and a camphor-like lift. In the mouth the wine has substance without coarse extraction: firm, fine tannins carry a mineral impression through the finish, at 13.5% alcohol. In 2020 the warm-season fruit makes that framework feel ample, while preserved acidity keeps it from becoming heavy. Roast pigeon, herb-crusted lamb or a mushroom tart suit its berry depth and savoury undertow. Let the wine unfold gradually in a roomy glass, and expect forest floor and truffle to appear with further age.
Winery Background Charles-Henri and Marie Génot-Boulanger founded the estate in Meursault in 1974, and its vines have held organic certification since 2018. Here the Pinot Noir is harvested by hand and destemmed, and indigenous yeasts drive a two-to-three-week fermentation, with pumping over used more often than punching down. Around a year in oak, followed by stainless steel, shapes the texture without replacing the vineyard's character. The domaine leaves its red wines unfiltered, preserving the breadth and fine tannin that mark this slope.
