Vintage Character The 2022 Burgundy season combined relatively late budburst with four heatwaves and drought. Later growth helped limit April frost exposure, while small rains allowed vines to continue towards harvest. The regional wine board found concentrated wines with lively fruit. At Mercurey 'En Sazenay' Premier Cru, the Pinot Noir grows high on an east-facing slope. Clay-limestone soil and the incline provide the site with the water it needs, according to the estate. That makes 2022 more than a sun-ripened story: the hillside's position supports both mature fruit and a long, balanced line.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The estate describes an inviting mixture of roses, other flowers and red fruit, with red cherry and raspberry at the core, at 13.5% alcohol. Its exceptionally fine tannins melt into the palate rather than announcing themselves abruptly, yet the wine retains length. In a warm 2022 the red fruit is rounder, while the floral lift and delicate tannin preserve the cuvée's graceful character. Clove and earth add depth, and forest floor develops with age. A roast chicken with thyme, grilled duck breast or a mushroom tart offers savoury support without requiring a muscular red. Serve at about 15 degrees.
Winery Background Mercurey lies in the Côte Chalonnaise, not on the Côte de Beaune, and this premier cru has a precise vineyard identity within it. Génot-Boulanger farms 1.81 hectares on this east-facing slope, with vines planted partly in the 2000s and partly in 2015. Founded in Meursault in 1974, the estate has certified its cuvées organic since 2018. Its Pinot Noir is picked by hand, fully destemmed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts for about two to three weeks. Extraction is gentle. Maturation includes roughly twelve months in oak with a modest new-barrel share, then six months in stainless steel. Unfiltered bottling retains the floral, fine-textured style.
