Vintage Character 2021 opened with a very early budburst, then hard frost on the nights of 6 to 8 April destroyed between 50 and 90 per cent of the crop in many vineyards. Flowering was ideal and the sun came back from mid-August, but volumes stayed very low. The result is a smaller, fresher vintage in which careful selection by the grower made the difference. In 2021, the Pommard 'Les Chaponnières' Premier Cru from Domaine Parent reflects that season. Les Chaponnières is a premier cru of Pommard, the village where Domaine Parent has its cellar and offices. Premier cru is the level just below grand cru and is reserved for named sites of recognised quality.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Dark plum, black cherry and a little spice come with earthy, mineral undertones. It is dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high acidity and medium tannins. The palate is structured and sturdy, with firm tannins typical of Pommard. Age brings leather, forest floor and truffle. Roast lamb, braised short rib and mushroom dishes work well with its firmness. Serve at about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a wide glass, and decant a young bottle for a short time if you like. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape that shows differences of site and vintage clearly, which is why Burgundy takes vineyard names so seriously.
Winery Background Domaine Parent was established in Pommard in 1803 by Claude Parent, and the family's presence in Burgundy dates back to the 17th century. Sisters Anne and Catherine Parent, the 12th generation, took over from their father Jacques, with Anne responsible for viticulture and winemaking and Catherine running the commercial side. The estate covers about 10 hectares, all in the Côte de Beaune, and produces wines at every level from regional to grand cru, mainly red, with Pommard as its signature. This wine is one of the sites that the domaine highlights for its Pinot Noir.
