Vintage Character 2018 was a hot, early and generous season that gave both quality and quantity in the Côte d'Or. Whites came in large volume and are opulent and soft, with the best showing enough structure to age in the short term. In 2018, the Corton Blanc Grand Cru from Domaine Parent reflects that season. Corton white is a grand cru made from Chardonnay on the hill of Corton, in the Côte de Beaune. As a grand cru, it comes from the highest tier of the classification, which covers only a small share of the vineyards in the region.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Ripe pear, white peach and citrus come with toasted nuts, spice and flint. It is dry and medium-to-full-bodied, with medium-high acidity. The palate is full and structured, with firm acidity and a long mineral finish. It rewards patience, deepening into honey, hazelnut and dried fruit. Lobster, roast chicken and creamy sauces suit its weight. Serve at about 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, and avoid over-chilling so the aromas can open. This is a 1.5-litre magnum, which many collectors prefer for ageing and for sharing. Chardonnay is a flexible grape that reflects its site, from the steely edge of Chablis to the richness of the Côte de Beaune. It also suits a glass at the start of a meal, since the acidity wakes up the palate.
Winery Background Domaine Parent was established in Pommard in 1803 by Claude Parent, and the family's presence in Burgundy dates back to the 17th century. Sisters Anne and Catherine Parent, the 12th generation, took over from their father Jacques, with Anne responsible for viticulture and winemaking and Catherine running the commercial side. The estate covers about 10 hectares, all in the Côte de Beaune, and produces wines at every level from regional to grand cru, mainly red, with Pommard as its signature. White Corton is much rarer than the red, and it is known for weight and a mineral backbone.
