Vintage Character The 2021 Sta. Rita Hills Racines Wenzlau Vineyard Chardonnay captures the essence of California’s cool-climate coastal terroir, offering a poised interplay of energy, minerality, and refined richness. The 2021 vintage in Santa Barbara County was shaped by a mild, steady growing season with cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures, fostering purity and vibrancy in the fruit; these conditions allowed for extended hang time, preserving bright citrus and orchard fruit while building layered complexity.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Awarded 94 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, this Chardonnay opens with expressive aromas of Meyer lemon, white peach, and subtle hazelnut, underscored by a hint of crushed stone. The palate is lively and textured, revealing juicy pear, lemon curd, and a touch of saline minerality, all wrapped in a refined, lingering finish with gentle oak integration. Exceptionally food-friendly, it pairs beautifully with roast chicken and tarragon, seared scallops, or a classic French Comté cheese.
Winery Background Racines is a collaborative project uniting the expertise of Burgundian winemakers Étienne de Montille and Rodolphe Péters with Santa Barbara’s Justin Willett, dedicated to crafting site-expressive wines from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The Wenzlau Vineyard, located on the western edge of the appellation, is organically farmed with a focus on sustainability and soil health. Racines’ winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, including gentle whole-cluster pressing, native yeast fermentation, and restrained use of French oak, all designed to showcase the purity and nuance of the vineyard’s Chardonnay. This commitment to both tradition and terroir results in wines that authentically reflect the unique character of the Santa Rita Hills.
