Donkey & Goat Winery 'Twinkle' Mourvèdre California 2024
Vintage Character
Donkey & Goat Twinkle Mourvèdre 2024 from California’s Sierra Foothills is an artisanal natural red built around a bright, easygoing expression of Mourvèdre. The 2024 vintage in California followed a generally steady growing season, helping preserve freshness and moderate alcohol while allowing the grape to reach supple ripeness. Sourced from the elevated Sierra Foothills, where warm days, cool nights, and rocky, well-drained sites often give wines both energy and savory lift, this bottling captures a lighter, more vibrant side of a variety more often associated with darker, weightier styles.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing
On the nose, it offers wild strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate and white pepper, with hints of hibiscus, crushed stone and dried herbs. The palate is light-bodied and juicy, driven by lively acidity and very gentle tannin, giving it a glou-glou charm without losing its mineral snap or subtle earthy nuance on the finish. Slightly chilled, it is especially appealing with duck rillettes, grilled lamb skewers, or mushroom pizza, all of which echo the wine’s mix of red-fruited brightness and savory spice.
Winery Background
Founded in Berkeley in 2004 by Jared and Tracey Brandt, Donkey & Goat helped define California’s modern natural-wine movement through a philosophy of minimal intervention and site transparency. The Brandts, influenced by experience in France’s Rhône Valley, work with sustainably farmed vineyards and favor native-yeast fermentation, restrained sulfur use, and a hands-off cellar approach. Twinkle is emblematic of their style: hand-crafted, energetic, and deliberately unforced, showing how thoughtful low-intervention winemaking can translate Sierra Foothills fruit into a red of purity, drinkability, and character.
