Vintage Character The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 'Les Folatières' Premier Cru was born in Burgundy's remarkably early season. A mild winter advanced budburst, flowering passed in excellent conditions, and the summer was hot and dry with an August heatwave. Harvest began soon after mid-August, yet Chardonnay retained acidity alongside ripe fruit. Les Folatières sits on a southeast-facing mix of limestone and marl, a different balance of stone and clay from the estate's high, lean La Garenne. In 2020 that soil and exposure give breadth to the fruit without eliminating the site's mineral momentum. Vinous scored it 90.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing The estate describes Les Folatières through white flowers (elderflower, jasmine and almond blossom) set against a stony impression, at 13% alcohol. Ripe pear and white peach are more visible in 2020, but the floral lift keeps the nose vivid. Across the palate there is a fuller opening that narrows into a fresh, almost mint-like tail. The domaine sees this wine as more aromatic and complete than its La Garenne bottling. Lobster, roast turbot or chicken with a delicate cream sauce meet its depth. Serve cool, not icy, in a broad glass so that fruit, flowers and the long mineral aftertaste emerge in sequence.
Winery Background Charles-Henri and Marie Génot-Boulanger founded the family estate in Meursault in 1974, and younger generations developed its holdings across Burgundy. Aude and Guillaume Lavollée now lead a domaine certified organic since the 2018 vintage. Their Les Folatières Chardonnay comes from a small parcel planted in the 1970s on southeast-facing limestone and marl. The estate's emphasis on vineyard origin shows in how separately it presents this wine and La Garenne, another Puligny Premier Cru. The fruit is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in oak, then rested in barrel and steel before an unfiltered bottling.
