Vintage Character The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet 'Les Folatières' Premier Cru grew in a year that demanded resilience from Burgundy vineyards. Spring frost cut potential crops across the region; warm, dry flowering helped, then repeated rain from late June through August raised disease pressure. A dry north wind and improved September weather helped Chardonnay complete ripening. On Les Folatières' southeast-facing limestone and marl, this sequence gives a wine less overtly ripe than 2020 but attentive to line and freshness. The mixed soil supports both body and long mineral drive. Vinous scored it 91.
Tasting Profile & Food Pairing Elderflower, jasmine and almond blossom are the domaine's own aromatic touchstones for this vineyard, at 13% alcohol. In 2021 lemon, green pear and a chalky impression surround those flowers, creating a more finely drawn nose than a warm-year bottle. The palate carries a supple middle into an energetic, faintly minty finish. The estate presents Les Folatières as more ample and aromatic than La Garenne, yet it remains a wine of persistence rather than simple richness. Try it with crab, turbot or roast poultry with herbs. Serve cool and give it time in the glass, so that the aromatic layers appear.
Winery Background The Génot-Boulanger estate was founded in Meursault in 1974 by Charles-Henri and Marie Génot-Boulanger. It grew into a family portfolio spanning several Côte de Beaune villages, now continued by Aude and Guillaume Lavollée. The vineyards have been certified organic since the 2018 vintage. Les Folatières comes from a small southeast-facing Chardonnay parcel planted in the 1970s, with limestone and marl shaping its balance. The named Premier Cru is a central part of the estate's Puligny range. The fruit is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in oak and bottled unfiltered after rest in barrel and steel.
